The MN Daily Business Division

The objective of the Business Division, and its brands Suite 450 and Gopher Life Magazine, gives students a sales and a multimedia agency experience. The Business Division has two goals; to provide students with opportunities for creating real work for local clients while cultivating professional skills, and provide advertisers access to new and innovative ways to market and advertise their business.

The Business Division provides students with professional experience in a college setting. We train, develop, and foster experiences that include account planning, digital media management, marketing, sales, public relations, and leadership that students can take with them once they step into the real world.

Business Division MANAGEMENT Positions:

Marketing Engagement Officer (internal hire)

Department: Business Division

Reports To: MN Daily Board of Directors

Hours: 30 per week

Pay: $475/wk

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the Daily’s business operations including Marketing and Creative departments. Work closely with Marketing Directors and Social Media Managers and others.
  • Manage financial affairs in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Review and assist in the preparation of the appropriate financial reports including projections, budgets, quarterly and annual financial statements, reports of advertising sales and any appropriate cost, revenue, or circulation analyses.
  • Supervise the Daily’s business operations including employees, funds, and property.
  • Support senior managers and solve problems that arise within the Daily’s business operations.
  • Organize the business staff providing for selection, promotion, discipline, and dismissal of staff.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving within the business departments.
  • Oversee training and staff development to ensure quality and diversity.
  • In cooperation with senior managers, develop an annual budget of anticipated expenses for departments subject to the Board’s approval.
  • Consult regularly with the Editor-in-Chief, General Manager, and the Board of Directors to ensure coordinated and efficient operations.
  • Work with the Office of the Publisher and Controller to prepare and present the annual Student Services Fees request.
  • Report all necessary information to the Board including all appointments of directors or managers, all dismissals, all substantial complaints, and changes in managerial or business policies or procedures.
  • Enforce and conform to the policies of the Board.
  • Carry out all other duties delegated by the Board and as laid forth in the Daily’s bylaws.

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to hear and speak English clearly.
  • Ability to visually analyze newspaper and online content.
  • Ability to use verbal intelligence to convey ideas, knowledge and thorough critiques for staff members.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a University of Minnesota student, fulfilling registration requirements laid forth in the bylaws.
  • Must have at least one year of successful experience at a newspaper or other business.
  • Must possess an understanding of newspaper operations, journalistic ethics, and appropriate media law.

  • Must exhibit demonstrated management and staff leadership skills, with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse staff and provide an effective training environment.

  • Must be able to handle confidential material.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to be an effective spokesperson for the Daily and to work effectively with others.

  • Must be creative and drive positive change within the organization.

  • Must be a team player and foster an environment that promotes innovation, development, goal    attainment, and implementation.

Daily Positional Responsibilities:

  • Check the day’s print and online ads, as well as ads scheduled for the following day to check for problems with text, artwork, color reproduction or compliance with advertising acceptance policy.

  • Check the advertising revenue on AdPro to make sure it is on track for the month. Eighty percent of the ad revenue should be scheduled by the end of the second week.

Weekly Positional Responsibilities:

  • Attend a Business and Admin meeting that includes all direct report managers as well as the sales managers

  • Meet with the general manager and editor-in-chief to discuss each division

Monthly Positional Responsibilities:

  • Attend meetings of the Board of Directors

  • Prepare monthly reports for the Board of Directors meetings

  • Have each manager prepare a monthly report and add it to the Google Drive

Semester Positional Responsibilities:

  • Conduct staff performance reviews
  • Complete goals for review by the Board of Directors evaluation committee

  • Have each manager complete goals for the upcoming semester

  • Meet with each manager to approve and discuss their goals

  •  At the end of the semester, prepare follow up information about your goals and meet with the      evaluation committee.

Annual Positional Responsibilities:

  • Formulate a budget with the controller and fellow OP members (summer)

  • Complete budget worksheets for every business manager. (summer)

  • Complete a publication calendar with admin and editorial and be sure to pass it along to ECM (summer)

  • Review the ad acceptance handbook and be sure to update it with any new laws, review it with managers (summer)

  • Ensure that the sales director is assessing the Daily’s current advertising rates and that these rates are comparable to the cost per thousand rates of other college newspapers (summer)

  • Work with the general manager, editor-in-chief, and controller to compile financial information for the student fees request (fall, spring)

Ongoing Positional Responsibilities:

  • Hire new people for the necessary managerial positions; development staff members to fill the leadership pipeline

  • Coordinate training opportunities for staff

  • Reward and discipline staff accordingly

  • Continue to search for new streams of revenue

  • Continue to search for ways to spend money more efficiently and make cuts where they are due

  • Ensure that managers of the advertising production, marketing, and sales departments are reviewing
      the ad acceptance handbook with each new hire

  • Keep track of all contracts and make sure they are being renewed on time

  • Update the managers who are on the CMBAM listserv and the SCS contact names

Business Division MARKETING & PR Positions:

Marketing Director (applications OPEN)

Pay: $210 per week

The Marketing Director is vital to The Minnesota Daily,  mndaily.com and Gopher Life Magazine. They are responsible for promoting the brands’ readership, brand management, sponsored content, market research and more. The Marketing Director leads the Marketing Associates and Marketing Interns team while working collaboratively with the Digital Media Manager, Sales Manager, Creative Director, General Manager, Editor-in-Chief, and Business Operations Officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Create strategic marketing plan that outlines team initiatives to better the organization and promotional process, as well as overall brand awareness
  • Collaborate with department heads in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of projects, initiatives, improvements, and changes in the organization
  • Direct and coordinate events and activities to promote the Minnesota Daily, expand the organization’s exposure, and build brand awareness and respect across platforms
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of in-house promotional campaigns for recruitment, special sections, events, and brand awareness
  • Plan and execute ongoing market research, including surveys, focus groups, and data analysis
  • Use data-driven marketing tactics to ensure that Minnesota Daily Media is making the educated decisions that are backed by data and driven by results
  • Manage the Copywriting Associate to coordinate the writing of sponsored content articles for select publications
  • Manage the Strategy Associate to develop a strategic plan for the entire school year
  • Manage the Communications Associate in building relationships with other organizations on campus and marketing Minnesota Daily Media to the campus community through on-campus events

Engagement Executive (applications OPEN)

The Marketing department is a vital component of MN Daily Media and is responsible for promoting readership and engagement, events, brand management, and more for both the Gopher Life and MN Daily brands. The Engagement Executive focuses on engaging our audience and clientele with the MN Daily Media brands through various means of outreach and promotion.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Marketing Director in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of projects
  • Coordinate at events, activities, and training produced by the Marketing department
  • Explore new avenues of marketing directly to students using the vast network of college media organizations 
  • Assist Sales Manager in working with local businesses and university groups to generate revenue through partnerships
  • Act as the Public Relations specialist by connecting and building relationships with student groups, university departments, and fraternity & sorority life
  • Create engaging and interesting campaigns that target our readership and audience at the University of Minnesota campus
  • Brainstorm and execute creative ways to market the Minnesota Daily through social media, email, website, podcasting, and print mediums
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Associate and Digital Strategy department to plan and execute social media campaigns
  • Meet weekly with the other Marketing & Admin leaders to communicate about upcoming and ongoing projects

The Digital Media Director is vital to The Minnesota Daily’s branded presence across all digital platforms, including mndaily.com, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and email blasts. The primary job duty for this position is to develop content for our social media channels, website, and ad placement. Audience Engagement Director will regularly work closely with the Daily’s sales and marketing teams to assist them with marketing and sales implementation across online platforms. The ideal candidate must be a natural leader and strategic thinker who can work in a fast-paced, creative environment with ever-shifting schedules and priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Set digital marketing strategies using all necessary tools (e.g. website, emails, social media, and blogs)
  • Stay current with cultural and social trends to identify new digital opportunities for the newsroom 
  • Analyze web traffic metrics and suggest solutions to boost web presence using Google Analytics
  • Build strong relationships and brand engagement with MN Daily’s readers through social media interaction and e-newsletter activities
  • Play an active role in consulting and providing clients with measurements after launching campaigns
  • Provide internal teams and clients with strategic and tactical programmatic media and paid social recommendations that align with client objectives

The Digital Strategy Associate is vital to The Minnesota Daily’s branded presence across all digital platforms, including mndaily.com, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and email blasts. The primary job duty is to assist the Director of Digital Media in managing the Daily’s digital presence with a holistic perspective — including planning digital campaigns, website and ad placement, and balancing editorial content with paid advertising and in-house marketing content.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and forecast advertising inventory on mndaily.com
  • Analyze web traffic metrics and suggest solutions to boost web presence
  • Plans and implements advertising campaigns, including search advertising, online ad placements including testing and recommendations for performance improvement
  • Communicate in an agency-like setting to develop social media strategies
  • Monitor social platforms for engagement and make suggestions based on the performance of posts
  • Strategize for monthly social media campaigns

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the designers to assign projects and oversee the advertisements and in-house projects as well as help organize and develop the internal operations of the Creative department. 
  • Responsible for advertising and project deadlines. 
  • Teach and supervise technical training
  • Answer questions from Creative Designers
  • Responsible for establishing a professional working environment and setting a model of appropriate behaviors. 
  • Solve departmental problems. 
  • Coordinate weekly departmental meetings with the Creative Designers

    The Marketing department is a vital component of The Minnesota Daily and Gopher Life Magazine and is responsible for promoting the brands’ readership and engagement, events, brand management, and more. The Content Creation Associate position will be responsible for ideating, managing, and producing content for the Gopher Life brand. This content will engage the Gopher Life target audience, and will promote the brand. 

    Responsibilities: 

    • Random and planned community outreach including but not limited to local and school events (example: cafe opening or football game)
    • Film creation (videos with the community, internal content, and promotional content)
    • Event film and image production
    • Editing of content (images and videos – ability to produce videos)
    • Create TikTok and instagram reels style content for the Gopher Life brand
    • Idea generation
    • Collaborative content (with coworkers, other exterior creators, and general community)
    • Caption creation on a multitude of platforms

    Qualifications

    • Must be a University of Minnesota student with at least 2 semesters remaining

    Creative Design Associate (applications OPEN)

    Department: Marketing

    Reports To: Creative Design Director

    Hours: 8 per week

    Pay: $120 per week

    Overview:

    Are you a design-minded individual? Do you have an interest in graphic design or advertising? Sounds like you’re a budding designer. The Minnesota Daily is looking for creative designers who enjoy fast-paced environments and who are ready to design creative advertisements for our clients.

    Responsibilities:

    • Work closely with the sales department and marketing department to create ads for clients and internal promotions that withhold the design standards for the Daily
    • Integrate text and graphics into finished goods
    • Follow deadlines both independently and as a team and enforce deadlines for employees from other departments
    • Work as a team member within the Creative department to produce ads and creative projects accurately and promptly
    • Assists Creative Director on designs for special issues
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications:

    • Must be a University of Minnesota student
    • Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on prompt electronic correspondence
    • Highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with an interest in graphic design, advertising, or typography
    • Experience in graphic design or visual communication courses or other related areas is preferred
    • Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign is required
    • Familiarity with functions of visual page elements such as headlines, photos, and text
    • Must be able to discriminate between colors when working with color advertisements
    • Must be able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines

    Alumni Relations Director (applications OPEN)

    Department: Alumni Relations

    Reports To: Marketing Engagement Officer

    Hours: 15 per week

    Pay: $150 per week

    Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with the Executive Director and MDAA President to design and structure the Minnesota Daily Alumni Association Advisory Board and its functions
    • Act as the liaison between MDAA Advisory Board and current staff
    • Work closely with the MDAA Advisory Board to achieve its mission and objectives
    • Facilitate MDAA mentoring and networking program with current staff
    • Create and execute alumni fundraising initiatives in collaboration with the General Manager and Fundraising Chair
    • Develop strategic partnerships with Daily alumni to secure sustainable funding and alumni cultivation
    • Communicate with OP members to identify project-based fundraising opportunities
    • Manage and maintain the MDAA website with current news, opportunities, and fundraising initiatives
    • Work with alumni networks on campus to cultivate our program and ensure a mutually beneficial partnership
    • Oversee the annual selection of the MDAA Student Representatives
    • Research similar alumni programs to learn and implement best practices
    • Co-host and attend all MDAA-sponsored events
    • Manage, maintain, and cultivate the MDAA member database
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    Assistant Alumni Relations Director (applications OPEN)

    Department: Alumni Relations

    Reports To: Alumni Relations Director

    Hours: 10 per week

    Responsibilities:

    • Work with the MDAA Mentorship Chair to manage all Minnesota Daily employee and alumni mentoring and networking opportunities
    • Develop and execute a mentorship program alongside the MDAA Mentorship Chair
    • Collaborate with the Alumni Relations Director to market the mentorship program to alumni and employees
    • Develop additional initiatives to connect Minnesota Daily employees and alumni
    • Perform other duties within purview as assigned by the Alumni Relations Director
    • Work with the MDAA Fundraising Chair to manage all MDAA fundraising projects
    • Research fundraising techniques within other non-profits and alumni associations
    • Develop and execute innovative fundraising strategies in collaboration with the MDAA Fundraising Chair and the Alumni Relations Director
    • Collaborate with the MN Daily Board of Directors for the execution of the Minnesota Daily’s Give to the Max Day yearly initiative
    • Assist with the development and telling of the Daily’s dynamic story and train students and volunteers to share this message
    • Identify strategic partners through the Alumni Database, identifying potential sponsors, potential collaborations, etc.
    • Create, collaborate on, and distribute the MDAA Monthly Newsletter
    • Develop and execute the promotional schedule for all MDAA events
    • Write, edit, and distribute various forms of internal employee, external, and alumni communication
    • Pitch and execute digital campaign ideas for development, events, or general awareness
